Background of the study
Urbanization in contemporary societies, particularly in Ibadan North, has dramatically reshaped traditional family structures. Rapid urban expansion has introduced modern lifestyles and economic imperatives that influence interpersonal relationships and generational bonds. As residents migrate from rural areas in pursuit of better opportunities, the established norms of extended families and communal living face significant alteration. Traditional family roles, once characterized by mutual support and collective decision-making, are increasingly replaced by nuclear arrangements that emphasize individualism and economic productivity. This transition, while fostering modernity, challenges the preservation of cultural heritage and intergenerational continuity. Researchers have noted that urban pressures can erode the moral fabric inherent in traditional settings (Adeyemi, 2023). The influx of diverse populations in urban centers further dilutes the uniformity of cultural practices, creating both opportunities for social integration and risks of cultural dissonance (Ogunyemi, 2024). Rapid urbanization also leads to physical changes in residential patterns, such as the development of high-density housing that limits communal space. Consequently, the reduced proximity among extended family members hinders the transmission of cultural values and collective social support. Environmental stressors associated with urban life contribute to shifts in domestic roles and responsibilities, further destabilizing traditional practices (Nwankwo, 2025). This study critically examines these transformations by exploring how modern urban demands conflict with and reshape traditional familial frameworks, thereby influencing social stability and cultural continuity in Ibadan North.

Statement of the problem
The accelerated rate of urbanization in Ibadan North has led to observable disruptions in traditional family structures. There is growing concern that the shift from extended to nuclear family systems has diminished the inherent social support mechanisms and cultural continuity once prevalent in the community (Adeyemi, 2023). As urban migration intensifies, the erosion of intergenerational bonds has led to a loss of collective identity, with families struggling to balance economic demands and cultural preservation. This problem is compounded by inadequate policy responses that fail to address the socio-cultural implications of rapid urban growth. Moreover, while urbanization fosters economic development, its unintended consequence is the fragmentation of familial relationships and weakened community networks (Ogunyemi, 2024). Limited empirical research specifically targets these shifts in Ibadan North, leaving a critical gap in the literature. The absence of comprehensive studies prevents the formulation of effective interventions that can safeguard traditional family values amid modernization. Additionally, the psychological and social impacts of such changes—ranging from increased familial conflicts to diminished community cohesion—have not been sufficiently explored, highlighting the need for in-depth investigation (Nwankwo, 2025).

Objectives of the study

  • To examine the impact of urbanization on the cohesion of traditional family structures.

  • To analyze changes in family roles and intergenerational dynamics resulting from urban influences.

  • To recommend policy interventions that support cultural preservation while accommodating urban growth.

Research questions

  • How does urbanization affect the cohesion of traditional family structures in Ibadan North?

  • What are the predominant changes in family roles and intergenerational relationships associated with urban growth?

  • What policy measures can effectively mitigate the negative impacts of urbanization on family cohesion?

Research Hypotheses

  • H1: Urbanization significantly diminishes the cohesion of traditional family structures.

  • H2: The shift towards nuclear families due to urban migration alters intergenerational dynamics.

  • H3: Policy interventions can mitigate the adverse effects of urbanization on traditional family values.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it illuminates the socio-cultural implications of urban expansion on traditional family structures in Ibadan North. By highlighting the erosion of long-standing familial bonds, the research informs policymakers and community leaders on the need for balanced urban development. The insights generated will aid in crafting targeted interventions that protect cultural heritage while promoting sustainable modernization (Adeyemi, 2023; Ogunyemi, 2024). Ultimately, the findings foster informed decision-making, contributing to community resilience and social stability.

Scope and limitations of the study
This study is limited to the impact of urbanization on traditional family structures within Ibadan North Local Government Area. It does not extend to other geographical regions or examine longitudinal changes beyond the current urban development trends.
